SOP – School of Youth Policy is a half-year course comprised of 40 hours of interactive classes (lectures, workshops, discussion) with a range of over 50 practical activities for around 20 school attendants per school (young people between 18 and 26 years of age). In 2004, Schools have been opened in Banja Luka, Bihac, Mostar, Sarajevo, Zenica and Zvornik with over 130 students in total.
The first generation Youth Policy School (ŠOP), under the patronage of the Mayor of Sarajevo, was opened in November 2002. The total of 29 participants completed the 6-month course, i.e., attended over 40 hours of inter-active training, had over 150 hours of practical activities and 900 hours of volunteer work. The best students had the chance to participate at the seminars in France, Germany, Slovenia, Italy and Switzerland . 15 participants of ŠOP have worked afterwards on small, temporary or permanents tasks in OIA and other NGOs, and one group established and registered their won NGO that started its activities in 2003. A team of 8 ŠOP graduates was additionally educated on peer education and in a special module of workshop called “Active Youth”, upon which they have been engaged, in cooperation with the City of Sarajevo, on the project of workshop in secondary schools in Sarajevo.
Given the excellent results and its specific nature, ŠOP continued training the second generation in November 2003, when 105 young people applied, out of whom 32 went through the program and finished School in June 2004.
With support of Swedish Olof Palma and Open Society Fund in March 2004 OIA opened 5 regional Schools of youth policy in Banja Luka, Bihac, Mostar, Sarajevo, Zenica and Zvornik. OIA got around 400 applications and 130 of them became student in the School. The regional school has the same curricula as Sarajevo School, but with addition of the follow up activities after the teaching phase. The Regional Schools are running under the patronage of the Mayor of Banja Luka (Banja Luka School), Minister of Education Una-Sana Canton (Bihac School), Prime Minister of Herzegovina-Neretva Canton (Mostar), Mayor of Zenica (Zenica School) and Mayor of Zvornik (Zvornik School).
